Lighthouse Ship Relandersgrund • 137 years
A living piece of Maritime History — in the Heart of Helsinki.
A maritime and historical experience anchored in Helsinki’s heart — 137 years of lighthouse ship heritage
Finland’s oldest remaining lighthouse ship was built at the Turku Shipyard (W. Crichton & Co.) in 1886–1888. Relandersgrund operated as a lighthouse vessel from 1888 to 1917 off Rauma at the Relander Shoal, which gave the ship its name.
Beneath the water, but never forgotten
In 1918, revolutionary sailors sent the vessel to the bottom of the sea. With peace restored, Relandersgrund was raised, repaired, and given a new mission as a reserve lighthouse in the Åland Sea (1918–1937). It would later journey inland to Lake Saimaa, renamed MKH 3 and Vuolle (1937–1977), where it supported survey expeditions that charted waterways and laid the foundations of Finland’s maritime infrastructure.
Rescued from the scrapyard — and returned to life as living Maritime Heritage
In 1991, the ship was saved from the scrapyard by its current principal owner, Susanna Seppä. Between 1992 and 1995, the hull and structural work were carried out at the Tallinn Shipyard, after which the interiors and exterior were lovingly rebuilt in Kotka by family and friends. The restoration never truly stops — each year, the ship is cared for and renewed so that its story will sail on.
